I like the way you circle around Losey as a man and his career, with being black-listed as a lead into this remarkable film. I love Losey's English input with writer Pinter,( The Servant, Accident, The Go Between), but he should not be tied to Pinter alone. This film script was offered to him by Delon, who was producing. Delon had already played with the idea of the double as Tom Ripley in Purple Noon. The way the film opens lays clear the undercurrents of terror and occupation. Delon is almost indifferent to the fate of the Jews he fleeces, buying their art works as they flee, at knock-down prices. Losey, who had directed Brecht plays, here uses the effect of alienation: we don't sympathise with the main character. Delon's performance is superb, and accumulates more animation and life as he goes on. The last 20 minutes are truly awful as Mr Klein gets sucked down the plug-hole of injustice into the horror of the camps. Losey here is galvanised by the subject matter: this is the only French film to show the occupation in France.

@johnsharman7262 thanks John for your excellent and insightful comments. Delon looking a bit more jaded, and gaunt fits the character perfectly. His focus on his obsession means he is too late to save himself. A tour de force all round.

Hi Ronin-In my opinion Les Yeux sans Visage reflects post-war European concerns with the ethics of science and the consequences of unchecked ambition. The film can be seen as a metaphor for the horrors of World War II and the post-war existential crisis in Europe. The idea of reconstructing a face at any cost echoes the era’s fears about the dangers of scientific progress without moral consideration. The Face of Another, on the other hand, reflects post-war Japanese concerns about identity, alienation, and the effects of rapid modernization. Both are great in their own right. I have the Criterion DVD box set with Pitfall (Otoshiana), Woman in the Dunes (Sunna no onna), and The Face of Another (Tanin no kao).

The only one among these three films I've seen is 'Mikey and Nicky', which I caught on the American cable channel Turner Classic Movies (TCM) just a few years ago. It's an estimable work, with both Falk and Cassavetes delivering fine performances, and with the theme of friendship torn by the contradictory motives of loyalty and betrayal effectively explored, but I don't regard it as a personal favorite. I prefer 'A New Leaf', May's first directorial effort, among this talented but relatively neglected filmmaker's body of work. I would say that 'Mikey and Nicky' is exemplary of the kind of gritty, realistic drama that flourished in the Seventies, in my estimation the single greatest decade in American cinema.

Youssef Chahine? What Israeli film would you pick? And from Switzerland "Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorfe" by Hans Trommer and Valérien Schmidely? One by Alain Tanner, Claude Goretta or Michel Soutter? "Les indiens sont encore loin" by Patricia Moraz? "Reisender Krieger" / "Traveling Warrior" by Christian Schocher? "Höhenfeuer" / "Alpine Fire" or "Grauzone" by Fredi M. Murer? "Farinet" by Max Haufler? Germany is missing? Portugal, Rumania, too? Spain? What about India? You got it with Ray´s "Devi"! And the wonderfully fresh and ever surprising Indie cinema from Thailand? Peter Weir? Vincent Ward? Do you know Arūnas Žebriūnas´ "Little Prince" adaptation of 1966? (It´s on UA-cam, by the way, ua-cam.com/video/6TNSt32XF38/v-deo.html ) Sarunas Bartas? Hi Ronin - I have 955 and 957 & 958 but not 956. I love Duvivier’s Panique and Leconte’s Monsieur Hire because both offer unique interpretations of Simenon’s story, showcasing the distinct cinematic styles and sensibilities of their directors. Duvivier presents a traditional, noir-infused adaptation that critiques societal flaws and highlights the destructive power of mob rule. In contrast, Leconte’s version is more modern and introspective, delving deeply into the protagonist’s psychology for a nuanced and empathetic portrayal.

My own exposure to Iranian cinema has been quite limited, but of those films I've seen, my favorite remains 'Sib' ('The Apple'), from 1998, the first effort by Samira Makhmalbaf, who was a mere teenager when she directed this ambitious and unusual feature. The film is part documentary, part dramatic recreation of a disturbing circumstance whereby a highly traditionalist man was discovered to be hiding his young daughters from the world, with the authorities intervening and ordering the two little girls to go to public school and become integrated into the larger society. The family members plays themselves, and it's both fascinating and dismaying to see these children and their mother (also woefully cloistered from the larger world), stunted in their emotional and intellectual development, begin to grapple with the complexities of the larger human society from which they had been hidden.

The fact that the seasons are changing through the day suggest that this is not some guy with a mental illness wandering through people’s gardens but is a metaphor for something deeper. I've heard of 'El verdugo' ('The Executioner'), but have not yet seen it. Today it is indeed one of the most praised Spanish films of its era, and another encouraging example of how art of real quality can still be fashioned under repressive circumstances. I saw 'Dreams' many moons ago on the big screen, at the time of its original Stateside theatrical release, and remember enjoying it, though it overall registered as a relatively minor work (I confess that Kurosawa has always remained a problematic filmmaker for me).

Odd that I'd never connected these films before, though upon confronting your episode the parallels are evident. Teshigahara's feature is less distinct in my memory, as I saw it several years ago via cable transmission (Turner Classic Movies [TCM]), while I saw 'Les Yeux sans visage' about a year ago, through a 35-millimeter print screened by my local film society. I appreciated both pictures, with "poetic" being quite an apt adjective to describe both, especially so for the Franju classic. Have you by chance seen Franju's 1949 documentary short 'Le Sang des bêtes' ('Blood of the Beasts')? The subject here is the slaughterhouses of Paris, with extremely graphic content, but framed through a self-consciously aesthetic perspective, replete with a serenely detached narration. The whole project is suffused with the same of kind of Surrealist sensibility evinced throughout the later, more famous feature 'Les Yeux sans visage'.

Hi, Ronin, very welcome topic, as love is the most precious experience in life, hence is arguably the supreme subject in any narrative art form. Indeed, it's challenging to think of a narrative film where some form of love doesn't play a role. Of course, we're focusing here on romantic love, to which I'd extend a broader parameter encompassing carnal love as well, film being after all a supreme vehicle for concupiscent spectacle and reflection. Of your selections, I've seen 'Last Year at Marienbad', 'Mona Lisa', 'I Know Where I'm Going', 'Delicatessen', 'Peeping Tom', 'Gregory's Girl', 'The Shop Around the Corner', and the better part of 'The Age of Innocence'. Of these, I especially cherish 'The Shop Around the Corner', 'I Know Where I'm Going', 'Last Year at Marienbad', and 'Gregory's Girl', though I could not find room for the last two, alas, in my own response to this exercise. My own selections given below are cited as much as possible in chronological order: --'The River' (1928), directed by Frank Borzage [survives only in fragments, but still extraordinarily effective even in such truncated state] --'Jewel Robbery' (1932), directed by William Dieterle --'The Shop Around the Corner' (1940), directed by Ernst Lubitsch --'The Strawberry Blonde' (1941), directed by Raoul Walsh --'The Palm Beach Story' (1942), directed by Preston Sturges --'Casablanca' (1942), directed by Michael Curtiz --'On Approval' (1944), directed by Clive Brook --'I Know Where I'm Going' (1945), directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger --'Pandora and the Flying Dutchman' (1950), directed by Albert Lewin --'What's Opera, Doc?' (1957), directed by Chuck Jones --'Man of the West' (1958), directed by Anthony Mann --'Lola' (1961), directed by Jacques Demy --'Ljubavni slučaj ili tragedija službenice P.T.T.' (1967), directed by Dušan Makavejev --'Zabriskie Point' (1969), directed by Michelangelo Antonioni --'Deep End' (1970), directed by Jerzy Skolimowski --'Avanti!' (1972), directed by Billy Wilder --'Robin and Marian' (1976), directed by Richard Lester --'Annie Hall' (1977), directed by Woody Allen --'Cet obscur objet du désir' (1977), directed by Luis Buñuel --'The Scenic Route' (1978), directed by Mark Rappaport --'Conan the Barbarian' (1982), directed by John Milius --'Romancing the Stone' (1984), directed by Robert Zemeckis --'Passion in the Desert' (1997), directed by Lavinia Currier --'Yes' (2004), directed by Sally Potter --'Brokeback Mountain' (2005), directed by Ang Lee

I was able to watch this restored version last night on Kanopy. I’d seen Steve reference the film also when he did my movie challenge. As you say, definitely some great compositions and use of colour palette. Wonderfully spectacular fable even if I wasn’t always engrossed with some of the dialogue (but a rewatch might fix that as I didn’t know what to expect). I particularly liked the character (Nightingale the robber, was it?) who blew strong gusts of winds and the bending trees in the forest. A visual treat for sure. My favorite Demy film of those I've seen is 'Lola', one of the early masterpieces of the French New Wave, and a picture that reveals the director's home town of Nantes to be as magical a place as the Paris being celebrated at the same time by the other young lions of the Nouvelle Vague. (I haven't seen 'La Baie des anges' or 'Peau d'âne', and I agree that 'Une Chambre en ville' is weaker than 'Les Parapluies de Cherbourg' and 'Les Demoiselles de Rochefort'). I wonder if you are familiar with 'Model Shop', Demy's 1969 sequel to 'Lola', that picks up that character's continuing adventures in Los Angeles. It's a curious film, not wholly successful, but rather fascinating as a window onto a specific place at a specific time. I can remember seeing the trailer for Demy's 1972 feature 'The Pied Piper' in the theater when a small child, but have never seen the actual film itself.

I think this was a very underrated movie. I really liked it a lot. I loved the father - son relationship depicted in the movie between the son, Will Halloway (Vidal Peterson), and his elderly fragile father, Charles Halloway (Jason Robards). I thought it was very poignant and heart-tugging - especially the scenes where Will & Jim are hiding in the gutter from Mr. Dark and Will reaches through the gutter screen to hold his father's comforting hand, plus in the Hall of Mirrors where Charles smashes through the mirror and reaches out to pull Will from the water - in the process atoning for his inability to pull a then four year old Will out of a dangerous current eight years prior at the Indigo River and instead having to watch someone else do it for him. Jonathan Pryce was also great as Mr. Dark, a truly evil mysterious man with magical powers - a probable acolyte of the devil- who together with others in his evil carnival feed on the lusts, desires, regrets, and greed of his victims. Granting them their wishes but with an evil twist and taking their souls to join his carnival in the process. I think the acting by the young child actors, Vidal Peterson and Shawn Carson was great and very believable. "Something Wicked this Way Comes" is a really good movie in my humble opinion with good acting and casting that is spot on. The theme, tone, and mood of the movie keeps in line with that of the book. In fact, I like the movie better than the book. I totally agree with the late movie critic Roger Ebert who gave it a high rating and said "this is a horror film with elegance". If you love Ray Bradbury's work you will love this movie. I make sure to watch the movie every October just before Halloween.

He was 25 then. After that he dissappeared. I really thought both he and Shawn would have more of a future in acting but I guess what happened to them is pretty common to child actors. Who knows, maybe they both decided it was too hard getting roles and wanted more steady income or just didn't like the lifestyle. Hope they are both doing well today and happy.
